Juliana ’22, Tyler ’22, Mei ’21, and Sophia ’25 perform in Nutcracker Ballet in the Land of Enchantment

Juliana ’22, Tyler ’22, Mei ’21, and Sophia ’25 perform in Nutcracker Ballet in the Land of Enchantment, where this beloved holiday classic comes to life in the late 1800s in territorial New Mexico. In her 7th year with the production, Juliana has captured the lead role!

Juliana ’22
Juliana got her start at Dance Theatre Southwest at the age of 7 and has remained at the studio since. She said she enjoys the teaching style of studio director, Patricia Dickinson, who also runs the company, Festival Ballet Albuquerque. “It’s very inclusive, very positive,” said Juliana. Juliana says dancing brings her “happiness and joy.”

About starring in Nutcracker Ballet in the Land of Enchantment, Juliana said: It’s stressful at times, but it’s really great. Every year (she’s been in the production for 6-7 years) I’ve idolized the person in this role, so to finally be chosen for this role is amazing!”

Tyler ’22
Tyler’s has participated in musical theatre for about 10 years and has many productions to his credit. He has worked with The Growing Stage, a children’s theatre company and has also performed with other community theatres. When he started ballet at Dance Theatre Southwest, Tyler admits that he was “a little hesitant” but soon fell in love with it. “It’s my new favorite thing now.”

About performing in Nutcracker Ballet in the Land of Enchantment, Tyler said: “I always went to ballets and thought they looked pretty difficult, but I never realized how much work goes into ballet productions...I’m drawn to the magic.”

Mei ’21
Mei’s true love for musical theatre blossomed over a year ago. Though she started dancing, gymnastics, and playing instruments many years ago, it wasn’t until recently that she wanted to get back into dance. She sought a trusted friend’s (Juliana’s) advice on where to go and decided that Festival Ballet would be the best fit.

About performing in Nutcracker Ballet in the Land of Enchantment, Mei said: “I’m excited to be able to be back in theatre, hanging out, seeing everyone really happy after the shows.”

Sophia ’25
Sophia’s dance experience came early in life as she began with jazz and flamenco when she was “little.” A friend encouraged her to try ballet and she enjoyed it.

About performing in Nutcracker Ballet in the Land of Enchantment, Sophia said, “I went to a friend’s performance of The Nutcracker. I just loved how I felt while watching the  performance. I wanted to be up on that stage dancing, too!”

Congratulations to Juliana, Tyler, Mei, and Sophia!
