Learning About Women's Rights in 6th Grade Humanities
Do the actions of everyday people make a difference? Sixth-grade social studies teacher Sky Jenkins is asking her students to really think deeply about this question as they study some famous and some not-so-famous individuals who have made significant contributions to society. Most recently, students in Ms. Jenkins’ classes learned about the suffrage movement and the events that led to the passing of the 19th amendment. The students created “one-pagers” illustrating and describing some of the events and themes that particularly stood out to them in this unit about women’s rights.
Later in the year, Ms. Jenkins’ students will explore the lives of Mahatma Gandhi, Cesar Chavez, and Martin Luther King in order to become familiar with both the human rights struggles and triumphs of people around the world. She says, “Sixth graders are capable of understanding complex issues and topics and have enormous capacity for empathy. I seek out material that taps into their natural curiosity and desire for justice. They are powerful and capable of changing our world. I want them to recognize this ability in themselves.”
