First Day of School & Convocation 2021

At our convocation ceremony on Monday, we kicked off our 27th year as a school by welcoming our community back to campus. We were thrilled to be able to gather in Sanchez Park and bring back several treasured traditions.

The morning started with seniors escorting 6th graders into Sanchez Park as our strings ensemble played beautiful music. After everyone got settled, Cantate opened the ceremony by singing “Riptide” by Vance Joy. We heard from our Board of Trustees Chair Santana Fontana, Head of School Dr. Jessie Barrie, 8th grade class speakers Rose and Brennan, and upper school student body co-presidents Livi ‘22 and Bella ‘22. This year, we had a special guest—Chrissie Waquie, a member of the Diné Medicine Man Association—who shared a song and offered a land acknowledgment and blessing, recognizing our sense of place. Finally, the school day officially launched when our founder, Dr. Peggie Ann Findlay, rang the bell that Manzano Day School gifted us on our first day as a school in 1995.

For many of us, convocation started the school year, but for our senior class, their day began at dawn. They celebrated their last first-day of high school by watching the sun rise from the rooftop of Budagher Hall—carrying out the time-honored tradition of senior sunrise. In a few short months, this class will be gathering in Sanchez Park for their graduation. Between now and then, we hope they create lasting memories and have an unforgettable final year at Bosque School.

As Dr. Barrie said in her convocation address, “I encourage all of us to embrace the new abnormal this year by slowing down to speed up, by investing the time to deeply listen to each other and meaningfully connect, to set healthy and appropriate boundaries grounded in our sense of self,  and to never take for granted the gift of this exact moment—of being here together, in this stunningly beautiful spot, with friends and family and supporters around us...Thank you for sharing the gift of this moment and the gift of being in this community. I wish you all a joyful start to the school year.”
