Jordyn ‘21 Accepted to BA/MD Program at UNM
Congratulations to Jordyn ‘21 who was accepted to the University of New Mexico's Combined BA/MD Program!
The UNM BA/MD program—which only accepts 28 students each year—is a collaboration between the UNM College of Arts and Sciences and the UNM School of Medicine and was designed to help alleviate the critical shortage of doctors in rural New Mexico. In addition to core science courses, students in the program take a series of social science and humanities courses that are specifically designed to prepare future doctors to work closely within underserved communities. It was this unique opportunity to work with disadvantaged populations that initially drew Jordyn to the program.
As a Hispanic female born and raised in the South Valley, Jordyn grew up in a community that consistently struggled, and watching people she cared about go without access to healthcare, sparked a desire to do something about it. She said, “A career in New Mexico, where my culture is deeply rooted, would allow me to give back to a community that has watched me grow. There are so many people in New Mexico who do not get the quality healthcare service they deserve. I wanted to apply for the program because, aside from it being an amazing program and opportunity, it focuses greatly on community.”
While at Bosque School, Jordyn cultivated a passion for both science and service. In fact, she feels that her senior thesis helped deepen her commitment to serve communities that historically lack access to healthcare. “Something that gave me an even greater connection to the program was my senior thesis this year which is focusing on the children of Hispanic and Latine communities’ experiences with accessibility to healthcare in New Mexico,” she said. “With this program, I am able to actually become like the many great doctors I interviewed for my thesis, and as a future doctor, combat the issues I have found.”
Jordyn is at her happiest when she is helping others, but she is quick to express her sincere gratitude for the help she has received, as well. “It has not been easy to get where I am today and I truly would be nowhere without the help and support of my family, friends, and teachers,” she says, “...I have watched as my mom worked multiple jobs to support us for as long as I can remember, making sure I was able to get the education I needed to strive for bigger things. I cannot wait for the day that I can repay her for all that she has done to make this all possible for me...I have my whole future ahead of me. It feels like a dream come true.”
We’re so proud of you and can’t wait to see what the future holds for you, Jordyn!
