Bosque School Alumni Speak at WILLDS Conference

For Wellness Wednesday programming on March 3, the WILLDS team hosted an upper school mini-conference that focused on critical topics of diversity, equity, inclusion, and sexual health, wellness, and education. Students were able to self-select three to four sessions they wanted to attend throughout the day from an offering of 14 workshops. Workshops were led by community partners and covered subjects like art activism and social change, anatomy and healthy relationships, civil rights and equity work, gender binaries, and more.

Bosque School alum, Christine Phan ‘16, was able to lead a session where she shared her experience as an Asian American at Bosque School and at the University of New Mexico. While at Bosque School, Christine was the leader of the Student Leader for Equity and Diversity (SLED) and wrote her senior thesis on the whitewashing of Asian characters in Hollywood. “As an undergrad, I was the design chair of the Asian American Student Association where I got to make a lot of new friends and be a part of building the Asian American student community on campus,” said Christine. In an interactive session, upper school students had the opportunity to ask Christine anything about her experiences at school and beyond.

Another alum, Melina Baron-Deutsch ‘12, hosted a workshop that encouraged students to think creatively about what grounds them in their practice of social engagement. They discussed local grassroots efforts in the community and brainstormed possibilities for future meaningful ways to engage in social justice efforts. Melina was the leader of Students and Faculty for Equality (SAFE) during their time at Bosque School, as well as one of the founders of the Student Diversity Leadership Committee.

As a break during the day of workshops, Ms. Bode hosted an optional yoga session for students to get some movement in. 

The WILLDS program integrates theory and practice to help students develop the knowledge, skills, and vision necessary to promote critical thinking and self-awareness, inspire discernment, build community, and engage as effective community members who cultivate a more inclusive and equitable world.
