Leaping Forward

This month is a special one, with February adding a day to celebrate 2020 as a leap year. In my research, I learned that we add an extra day to the calendar in the form of February 29, also known as Leap Day. Put simply, these additional 24 hours are built into the calendar to ensure that it stays in line with the Earth’s movement around the Sun. While the modern calendar contains 365 days, the actual time it takes for Earth to orbit its star is slightly longer—roughly 365.2421 days. The difference might seem negligible, but over decades and centuries that missing quarter of a day per year can add up. To ensure consistency with the true astronomical year, it is necessary to periodically add in an extra day to make up the lost time and get the calendar back in sync.(History Channel

    • As I have written in my past two Buzz posts, Bosque has started down the path of some exciting initiatives and changes to deepen our academic mission, strengthen our students’ educational journey, and further prepare them for their future. While these may conceptually feel like big changes, they are in line with Bosque’s founding philosophy; we are very intentionally taking small steps along this path through extensive research, a scaffolded process, and an intentional, personalized design. 
  • Doing is a quantum leap from imagining.~Barbara Sher
    • Many schools imagine reconsidering the traditional model of teaching and learning. Many imagine ways to make school more dynamic, relevant, engaging, and student-centered. Many imagine truly “walking their talk” in regards to equity, access, and inclusion. At Bosque we don’t just imagine, we do these things. This started with the dream for a different kind of independent school 25 years ago around Peggie Findlay’s dining room table and continues today as we map out all of the amazing plans for our next 25 years.

  • Bosque being known as THE school in Albuquerque that is best preparing today’s children to thrive in today and tomorrow’s world?
  • Bosque being heralded as a nationally recognized model of how and why schools across the country can and should be Challenging Education?
  • Bosque contributing and collaborating deeply within Albuquerque and New Mexico along with industry leaders and organizations, as they come to know our school and students while building partnerships and advocating for us? 
  • Bosque’s access and equity efforts challenging the perpetuation of privilege that has permeated independent schools since their inception? Bosque being seen as a school for all of Albuquerque’s children, having the philanthropic partners to enhance access, and being a model of inclusive practices that enhance knowledge of self, collaboration in community, and new models of productive civil discourse? 

I see all of this. This is our future. We cannot recognize this vision alone. We need the support of our community to dare greatly and stand with us on this journey. One critical way you can help recognize this vision is through your support of our Annual Fund. My goal is for Bosque to be able to show that 100% of our staffulty, parents, trustees, and alumni stand behind our school as we seek to partner with foundations and philanthropists (many of whom will not consider funding without strong and obvious internal support) . We won’t always get things perfect...we will make mistakes...but I hope your belief in us—our school, our philosophy, and our potential—gives you the faith to stand with us.
