Author's Celebrations in 7th Grade English Classes

Before winter break, students in Sean Etigson’s English classes ended their unit on historical fiction with a creative final project. Students presented historical fiction pieces that they researched and wrote themselves. Students picked a historical period, figure, or event; researched their selection; then decided upon a format to present their findings. The pieces presented ranged from poems, videos, and plays to short stories and picture books, and even a comic book. Students also varied the perspective from which their works were told. Some took a first-person perspective; others used a third-person narrator. The projects are part of author celebrations the classes have at the end of every semester. It was a true inquiry-based project which culminated with students reading their finished work to the rest of their section (and some parents).
