Student Spotlight: Senior Thesis and Colloquium-Grace '20
Senior Thesis and Colloquium is the culmination of a seven-year journey. Bosque seniors undertake a yearlong independent research project and deliver their findings in a twenty-page research essay, as well as in a public presentation at Colloquium. Over the course of the year, students will submit a formal prospectus, conduct text-based research and fieldwork, and test their arguments at a defense.
In the weeks leading up to Colloquium on May 13 and 14, the BUZZ will feature the thesis topics of Bosque’s seniors and provide insight into student researchers as they work toward the completion and presentation of their finished work.
The social-emotional impact of Victoria’s Secret on inclusive advertising campaigns.
About Grace’s Thesis:
Grace is doing a case study focused on Victoria’s Secret new marketing campaign which was recently launched in reaction to the boycott of many consumers. She wants to explore whether this change will have an effect on their plummeting sales, or if it’s already too late for the company to recover. Grace is going to use American Eagle as an antithesis in her research. She chose American Eagle because of its inclusive advertising style, using disabled models and women and men of all sizes and ages. At school, she is going to do a survey and send one to regional stores as well.
Grace was inspired to research this topic because of her own life experience and working at Aerie (a sub-brand owned by American Eagle). “It’s important to me because, as I’ve been growing up, I’ve had a hard time shopping at retail stores because my body wasn’t ‘typical.’” Aerie’s inclusivity changed her shopping experience and made it much more positive.
Grace has been a part of All-State Choir and performed in the annual musical every year since she joined Bosque School. Her favorite musical was “Beauty and the Beast,” where she played LeFou. She will miss the performing arts community when she graduates from Bosque School. Grace plans to study Music Therapy in college.
