Student Spotlight: Senior Thesis and Colloquium-Ethan R. '20

Senior Thesis and Colloquium is the culmination of a seven-year journey. Bosque seniors undertake a yearlong independent research project and deliver their findings in a twenty-page research essay, as well as in a public presentation at Colloquium. Over the course of the year, students will submit a formal prospectus, conduct text-based research and fieldwork, and test their arguments at a defense.

In the weeks leading up to Colloquium on May 13 and 14, the BUZZ will feature the thesis topics of Bosque’s seniors and provide insight into student researchers as they work toward the completion and presentation of their finished work.

Ethan R. '20
Ethan’s thesis topic is on the storage of sustainable energy sources in New Mexico moving toward carbon-less emissions in the near future.

About Ethan’s Thesis:
For his thesis, Ethan is looking at current energy storage systems (e.g., batteries, magnetic storage systems, semiconductors, etc.). While looking at these industry standards, he will also be exploring different potential future technologies. For his fieldwork, he is going to build a sodium ion battery and possibly talk to some members of the local science community who have been researching this topic. Tying all of these things together, he hopes to provide his opinion on these topics and offer a solution to the issue of energy storage.

Ethan explained his reasons for choosing this topic: “Along with many people my age, I am worried about our environment and the impact it will have on our future. I want to look into the feasibility of these claims of carbon-less emissions in the near future which Governor Luhan Grisham has made.”

Researcher Bio:
Ethan has served as captain of the track team for four years. He has also been on the Judicial Committee for two years. His other activities include Model UN, Service Learning leader (BUST), and being a Grade Representative. After high school, Ethan hopes to study Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering in college.
