Chloe ‘20 accomplished a major feat this summer. With her grandfather by her side, she climbed Mount Kilimanjaro. Their achievement did not go unnoticed. In fact, she and her grandfather made the front page of the Albuquerque Journal.
Their story started on a regular day as they hiked a trail together in the Sandia Mountains in October. Out-of-the-blue, the duo found themselves approached by another hiker asking if they would be interested in climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. This question opened a door of possibilities for Chloe and her grandfather. With some contemplation and a great deal of training, the pair turned the possibility of climbing such a well-known mountain into a reality. In early July, the two traveled to Tanzania to begin their eight-day hiking adventure.
Chloe’s grandfather, who has a breadth of hiking experience, says that Chloe “sailed to the top” of the 19,341 ft. mountain. They reached Uhuru Peak, the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, in time to see the sun rise over the clouds. This was Chloe’s first time climbing such a tall, grand mountain, but it might not be the last. With Mount Kilimanjaro under her belt, we are waiting to see what mountain might be next. Way to go, Chloe!
