Youth Celebrate Diversity Conference an Overwhelming Success
Three hundred students from around the state of New Mexico participated in the First Annual New Mexico Diversity Conference for Youth at Manzano High School last weekend, a unique opportunity to build community, spark dialogue, and initiative positive change. Throughout the conference day, students and faculty advisors heard from a keynote speaker, participated in discussion groups led by trained student facilitators, attended two workshops of their choice, and made a plan to improve their local school or community.
Bosque played a major role in the conference program with six students serving on the conference’s executive committee helping to plan the event, eleven students becoming trained to facilitate youth-only discussions during the morning session, one faculty member lending his expertise for an afternoon session workshop, and Bosque’s Cantate singing during the opening ceremonies of the event.
“It was amazing,” said upper school teacher Scott Melton, who facilitated the “Racism and the New Anti-Semitism” workshop. “The feedback we got from the students was that it was absolutely fantastic, and they can’t wait to do it again next year.” Mr. Melton participated in the conference in his capacity as an ADL (Anti-Defamation League) Words-to-Action facilitator.
Thank you Carla Thomas and Wendy Jones, CFO of El Pinto Restaurant, for their generous support of and contributions to this event which helped to make it possible!
Given the strong reception and success of this event, YCD is starting plans for a second annual New Mexico Diversity Conference for Youth, scheduled for early March 2020. Registration for this event will open in September 2019.
If you are interested in taking a leadership role and helping to plan this event, please consider joining the Executive Committee, a group of students and adults who select the workshop topics, presenters, speakers and performers at the conference. A special thanks to Bosque student discussion facilitators and executive committee members.
