Mock Trial Team Heads to State Finals

Nearly 30 Bosque students competed last week for a chance to participate in the State Mock Trial Competition. The competition was held at the Bernalillo County Metropolitan Court in Downtown Albuquerque. Bosque had three teams representing the school; two of the teams finished in the top 10 out of approximately 30 teams competing. One of those teams finished 4th and qualified for the State Finals which will be also be held at the Metropolitan Court on March 8 and 9. Several Bosque students received individual awards for their roles at the event. Marigold ’19 won the courtroom artist contest, Montana ’19 finished 2nd in the courtroom journalist contest, Annie ’20 was named outstanding attorney, and Shane ’20 and Eden ’20  were named outstanding witnesses.

“In only the second year of our team’s existence, Bosque School now has one of the largest Mock Trial programs in the state,” said Mock Trial Coach Zach Lang. “Students have been working multiple nights a week since the first week of school to prepare for this competition, and all that preparation clearly paid off.”

Since 1978, the Gene Franchini High School Mock Trial Program has helped New Mexico teens gain an understanding of the legal system by providing opportunities for school teams to participate in academic competitions where players assume attorney and witness roles in court cases. Coaches help students develop questioning, critical thinking, and oral advocacy skills. Mock Trial helps students to improve proficiency in such basic skills as listening, speaking, reading, and reasoning; the program especially fosters cooperation among diverse groups of young people.
