Horizons Founder Selected as Diverse Business Leader

Last week, Juaquin Moya, founder and executive director of Horizons Albuquerque was honored among eight other leaders in the Albuquerque community with a Diverse Business Leader Award presented by Albuquerque Business First. The awards were launched in 2016 to recognize the outstanding leaders from diverse backgrounds who help make New Mexico unique. Rachel Sams, editor-in-chief of Business First said, “Our eight honorees for 2018 bring valuable perspective and expertise to their roles throughout the community.”

On receiving the nomination and being selected for the award, Juaquin said, “I’m truly inspired and honored to be recognized by Business First and receive the  Diverse Business Leader Award. Too often I hear “brain drain” when it comes to people leaving New Mexico, and it is nice to be recognized as “brain gain” for heart work! I was the first in my family to leave the state to go to college in Connecticut. At the time, I thought I’d never come back, but I returned with the mission of improving access to college for more New Mexicans. After directing Bosque’s College Counseling Department for ten years, I started Horizons Albuquerque to help youth stay in school, graduate from high school, and go on to college.”

Horizons is a nationally recognized academic enrichment program that addresses the achievement gap and summer learning loss for public school students from low-income families that qualify under the federal income guidelines for free or reduced lunch. Horizons Albuquerque, an affiliate of Horizons National, partners with six Albuquerque Public Schools. The program is grounded with a six-week summer school session and is supplemented with family engagement workshops, and after-school tutoring throughout the school year. Horizons blends academics with arts, sports, and cultural enrichment as well as confidence-building activities, particularly swimming, guitar, and tennis.

2018 marks Horizons Albuquerque’s fifth-year anniversary; a celebration will take place on January 24, 2019 featuring award-winning poet and author Jimmy Santiago Baca. Stay tuned for more details on the anniversary celebration!
