Get to Know Dr. Becky Bone: Bosque School’s Middle School Counselor
With nearly five years under her belt as a school counselor, Dr. Bone has been a valuable asset to Bosque School for almost two years. Prior to joining us here, she garnered extensive experience working with adolescents and their families in various settings, including medical centers, hospitals, and academic institutions. With a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology with specializations in Clinical Neuropsychology and Behavioral Neuroscience, as well as an M.A. in Clinical Psychology with a focus on Child and Family Therapy, Dr. Bone brings a wealth of academic expertise to her role.
Dr. Bone's commitment to supporting adolescents and families takes center stage in her multifaceted role. She serves on the Student Support Team alongside the school nurse and learning specialist and provides comprehensive physical, academic, and mental health support. Beyond this, Dr. Bone engages with students individually and in groups, maintaining a seamless continuity of care by collaborating with parents and external counselors. Her involvement with faculty and staff aids in addressing classroom challenges and social-emotional difficulties, and her passion shines through in teaching neuroscience in the WILLDS Department—an experience she describes as one of the best aspects of her job.
Over the last 18 months, Dr. Bone spearheaded the development and implementation of a comprehensive suicide prevention program at Bosque School. The program encompasses a suicide protocol for middle and upper school students, including a standardized assessment adopted by mental health centers in Albuquerque. Faculty and staff have received crucial training on identifying mental health warning signs and risk factors for adolescents. Dr. Bone's dedication to adolescent mental health extends to her creation of a neuroscience class for middle school students, designed with a focus on understanding the whole adolescent.
The role of a school counselor comes with its share of challenges, and Dr. Bone acknowledges the delicate balance required to provide emotional support to students and families while safeguarding her own mental health. Regular physical activities, including biking and working out in her garage gym, form part of her self-care routine. Prioritizing sleep and taking time away from school allow her to recharge, and she acknowledges firsthand the challenges of parenting three adolescents.
Dr. Bone's commitment to continuous education shapes her adaptive approach to meeting the diverse needs of students. She actively participates in professional organizations and is always learning from colleagues, fortifying her knowledge base to provide the best care to our students. Emphasizing the relational aspect of her work, Dr. Bone believes that building connections with adolescents and their families is foundational to effective counseling, and we are thrilled to have her in our Bosque School community.
