Bosque School sophomore Gael was selected to participate in the 2024 Engineering and Computing Summer Academy, hosted by the University of New Mexico's School of Engineering, Engineering Student Success. Over the course of four weeks, Gael engaged in a series of STEM-related seminars and workshops, along with personal enrichment and college preparation activities. The group attended daily classes in Arduino & Robotics, math preparation, and AutoCAD, as well as weekly courses on topics such as Electrochemistry Methods, Cybersecurity, Chemical Engineering/Synthetic Biology, Microfluidics/Fluorescence, and Astrophysics. Program excursions included outdoor rock climbing and attending the Spaceport America Cup Competition. Gael worked with a research team to explore the role that AI plays in society and politics and presented an AutoCAD project. It was both an honor to be chosen and, in the end, an overall great experience for Gael, who said, “Although engineering was already one of my interests, the camp sparked more of a creative mindset and added to my interest in STEM. It was a first step into the real world of engineering—chemical, mechanical, computer, and social.”
