Bobcat Highlight- Josie K.

Name: Josie K.

What’s your favorite class at Bosque School, and why?

My favorite class is 9th-grade humanities with Ms. King. So far, we’ve been learning about ancient Mesopotamia and the different civilizations of that time. We also read Gilgamesh and learned about the significance of the poem in history. It’s my favorite class because Ms. King makes the content fun and interesting.

Can you share a memorable project or assignment you’ve worked on and what made it special?

In Profe Pacheco’s Spanish 3 class, we had an assignment where we chose seven photos from our childhood then talked about them and presented them to the class. I think what made it special was that we all got to see each other when we were really little, and it was fun to see how different we all looked from when we were little kids.

What extracurricular activities or clubs are you involved in, and what do you enjoy most about them?

I play varsity soccer, and I’m in many clubs: Thespians, Bridge USA Dialogue, and student government. I like being in all the clubs because I get to learn about different things and help out in the community. For soccer, it’s my second year, and I love the community and close relationships we all have, on and off the field. I also do the musical every year, and similarly, the community built around what we’re doing is really cool.

Do you have a particular hobby or interest outside of school that you’re passionate about?

I play club soccer in the spring, mainly because soccer is really the only sport I’ve ever enjoyed doing, so when I can do it year-round, I do.

What’s a book, movie, or TV show you’d recommend to your peers and why?

A book I’d recommend to my peers is Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Saénz. I’m actually doing a book presentation on this book in my seminar class. It’s about two teenage guys in the 1980s, but I feel like it really connects with how teenagers experience life and how both our opinions and how we live our lives are unique and important.

What would you tell a family who is considering Bosque School?

Bosque School has helped me in so many ways. I’ve learned so much in my time going to Bosque, and I’m barely halfway through my time here. I’ve also learned a lot about equity, community, and culture. I really do think Bosque does a fantastic job addressing societal stereotypes and issues, and we’re always working to find a way to improve our greater community at Bosque. I’ve also made so many friends here, and even those of my peers who I’m not really friends with, we’re still comfortable with each other enough that we can talk inside and outside of class. Bosque really is just a beautiful community.

Do you have a funny or moving anecdote about Bosque School that you'd like to share?

During the Tell-a-Tale immersive in 8th grade, we went on a writers’ retreat in Glorieta, New Mexico. We took walks in the mountains and just relaxed and enjoyed ourselves. One night, we played blacklight dodgeball. There was neon paint around the walls, and the balls were supposed to be neon, but most of the fabric had torn off. At one point, everyone in the immersive was playing. It was cool to see how we could all have fun together even though we’re in different social groups throughout the year. I’ve always loved immersives because of that. You can step out of your comfort zone and experience and enjoy things you wouldn’t have otherwise gotten to do.
