Sean Cervantes ‘22 has truly enjoyed his time as an undergraduate at the University of New Mexico, and this month, he will graduate with a bachelor’s degree in science. Sean is also excited to be graduating completely debt-free due to the Opportunity and Presidential scholarships.

“As a pre-med student, my four years at UNM consisted of running between the main campus and the health science center, making sure to take advantage of all the research and clinical opportunities the university provides. Through all the chaos of extracurriculars, shadowing, volunteering, multiple jobs, and exams, I have found a community of hard-working pre-health students who are dedicated to becoming the best physicians possible, while still knowing how to have a good time! I’ve maintained strong connections to the community Bosque created for me and have enjoyed visiting my friends at their colleges across the country.

“It would be hard to pick just one favorite memory from my time at Bosque. My peers and amazing teachers certainly influenced the direction I took in college. I will never forget the long cross-country runs through changing fall leaves, or string concerts where we got to share music with the community. The Medical Reserve Corps proved to me that healthcare is where I belong, and the wildlife seminar started me down a long path of research and discovery.”

After graduation, Sean plans to take a gap year to focus on applying to medical schools. He will also continue in his current position as a research assistant in UNM’s emergency medicine department, while starting a new job as a community support worker through the division of behavioral health at UNM Hospital. Additionally, he will complete a post-baccalaureate certificate focused on interpersonal communication, cultural humility, and community engagement at the UNM Health Sciences Center. “New Mexico, Albuquerque, and Bosque School will forever be a strong part of my identity and purpose. As a future physician, I am looking forward to giving back, supporting, and protecting the community that raised me to be the person I am today.”
